 Humane Education - Position Now Available

Throughout the year our Humane Educator and a special companion travels to area classrooms to present Humane Eduction to school children. Each presentation is designed to tie into the government required curriculum and to be age-appropraite. There is a short summary of the services provided by the Humane Society of Durham Region and a unique education theme is presentated to each grade level. Visual resources enhance each presentation, and a follow-up activity sheet given to reinforce the lesson taught.

This program is available for all school groups, birthday parties, community clubs such as Guides, Scouts free of charge.

are kids who are kind (humane) to animals. Animals share this world with us, so we need to show them respect and treat them kindly. Learn about our responsibility towards animals by clicking below on the topics of your choice.

  • Pet Care
    Learn about how to choose a pet, how to prepare for your new pet, what you need to provide for your pet to be a responsible pet owner, and techniques for grooming and training.
  • Working Animals
    Learn about how animals have helped humans in the various roles: herding, hunting, guards, search and rescue, guides, draft animals (pulling heavy loads), transportation and entertainment (movies, sports, zoos and circuses).
  • Vet Visit
    Learn about taking your pet to the vet, how to tell if your pet is sick, keeping your Pet healthy: vaccinations, parasites, spaying and neutering, preventing accidents and hazards, rabies control, and how to become a veterinarian.
  • Wildlife
    Learn of examples of wild animals in your neighbourhood, how they differ from pets, what to do if they are living in your home or attic, and how to help orphaned or injured wildlife. Learn of the threats to wildlife: how humans threaten their habitats, global warming, alien species, recreation, pets, pollution, hunting and poaching. Learn of the 10 ways that we can help wildlife.
  • Rabbits As Pets
    Learn how to know if a rabbit is right for you, what a rabbit eats, the choices in breeds, what a rabbit needs: its cage, its litter box, toys, grooming your rabbit, how to play with your rabbit, bunny-proofing your home, and understanding how rabbits communicate.
  • Animal Careers
    Can you name a job working with animals? Did you say “veterinarian”? When most people think of careers with animals, they only think of vets. But there are many different types of careers with animals. Learn about some of the other options!
  • Is a Reptile a Good Pet Choice For Me?
    Perhaps you have a fascination with snakes, lizards and turtles. Maybe you are interested in having a unique pet. Reptiles can make excellent pets, but if you don’t learn everything you need to know ahead of time, you may find you are unprepared for what is all involved. Find out ahead of time!
  • How Do You Choose A Dog?
    There are so many things to consider when making your choice in a dog. So often we simply fall in love with a cute little puppy and, just like that, make our choice. But is that the best way? What are the things we should think about before making that important choice.
  • Amazing Cats
    Cats are truly amazing animals and make terrific pets. Find out what makes them so amazing. Learn what you need to know to care for your new cat and make your home the perfect place for it to be happy.
  • Small Animals
    So often when we are choosing a pet, we only think of dogs and cats. But sometimes a small animal is a wiser choice for your family situation. Find out what is involved in having a small animal pet like a rabbit, a hamster, guinea pig, rat, budgie, degu, ferret, mouse, or chinchilla.
