Our architect Peter Archer has submitted his drawings
for our shelter.
It is based on the concept of the Midland
Shelter, which he also designed.
It was wonderful to visit their shelter and envision our future
home.
Everything will be geared to better air exchange and filtration
to keep down illnesses,
lots of natural light, improved accommodations for the animals,
up to date building materials for
the floors and walls to make for ease of cleaning, a separate
area for staff to have their breaks, a
large laundry room, 15 dog runs, each with its own window to
the outside as well as outdoor runs.
Separate cat rooms and cages as well as a communal cat area.
Three enclosed outdoor cat play
areas, a separate tub and shower area for the animals –
all in a beautiful, welcoming new building.
It is certainly very exciting.
We hope to incorporate “green” initiatives if possible
i.e geothermal and solar water heating.
Further costs we have incurred include $8 834.12 as a first
payment to Peter Archer and
Associates Architect for the design and outlay of our future
shelter.
This brings our current costs to $460 552.63 as of August 24,
2009.

In order to move ahead with the actual building,
we need to raise $1.5 million dollars.
We have development charges, construction costs etc and we hope
to have as many building materials and supplies donated as possible.
Our fundraising campaign will kick off within
the next two weeks. You may think 1.5 million is an impossible
task but it is not. Every single donation, large or small, brings
us one pawprint closer to building our shelter.
We encourage you to challenge your friends, co workers, service
clubs, a similar profession i.e. veterinarians, insurance agents,
pet groomers, realtors, dentists etc to match your donations.
Broken down, 1.5 million dollars would be 100 donations of $15
000.00,
75 donations of $20 000 etc. An example, one insurance company
to challenge 19 others to match his/her $1000 donation, or 39
others to match his/her $500 donation.
If every business or profession in Durham and elsewhere did
a similar challenge,
we could start to build.
Another breakdown would be 15 000 donations
of $100 or
30 000 donations of $50 or 750 000 toonies!
It’s very do-able and every single donation
will make the difference.
Look how far we have come already. Once we reach a certain amount
of our goal,
we can move on the next step towards building. I want to express
a very special thank you to the children everywhere who have
emptied their piggybanks, requested birthday donations to the
animals, bubblegum kids shovelled sidewalks, held dances, bake
sales and yard sales, did cookie grams, class fundraisers, nobody
doll donations, created jewellery to sell and many many more.
A toonie by many of you is as sincere and important a donation
for the animals as any other that we receive. You are the future
care givers of our animals and we thank you!
